The Community Council organised a project in autumn 2009 to plant 10,000 bulbs in Leith Links, working with local school groups. The project was in memory of Councillor Elizabeth Wardlaw who'd organised the original crocus bulb planting with schools in the Links many years ago.
The project was a great success and we were delighted with the response from local schools. The young people involved were all fantastic and it was a delight to work with them. On Thursday 29 October three classes from Leith Primary, 9 pupils from Prospect Bank, children and parents from Stanwell Nursery and one class from Leith Academy worked hard, even when it rained, to plant 3,000 bluebell bulbs beneath the trees in the Links outside Leith Primary. Then in the afternoon another class from Leith Academy started on the crocus bulbs. By lunchtime on Friday two more classes from Leith Academy took the total crocus bulbs along the edge of the Links adjacent to Duncan Place to 2,500, and along at the other end of the Park the Eco group from St Mary's (Leith) RC Primary - in Hallowe'en costumes - had planted a patch of 1,000 snowdrops. Over 200 people were involved. The final stage of planting, the Community Bulb Plant, was scheduled for Sunday 1 November but heavy rain forced us to delay the planting by a week. We were rewarded by a beautiful day on Sunday 8 November when a band of 15 volunteers finished the job, planting a patch of 1,000 snowdrops near the play park and another 2,500 crocus bulbs along Duncan Place. The Bulb Planting is supported by a grant from Scottish Natural Heritage, by Greener Leith, and the City of Edinburgh Council.
